Have you ever wondered why some paintings, especially paintings of old Dutch and Flemish masters look so much different among other pieces? One of the secrets is the unique technique used in the process of painting. Although it can slightly vary it usually consists of imprimatur, umbra layer, grayscale layer(s), color layer(s) and detailing layer. These partially translucent layers give the final painting its unique look. You can see it on the example of a portrait of Austian Emperor Francis Joseph I that I painted for an exhibition in Austria in 2016.
